Snow White Faces Backlash and Reinvention Ahead of Big-Screen Debut

In a series of understated promotional events, Disney is attempting to navigate the backlash surrounding its upcoming "Snow White" film, which hits theaters on March 21. The backlash has persisted since the film's announcement in September 2022. The new adaptation introduces a fresh origin story for Snow White, played by 23-year-old Rachel Zegler, who is of Colombian and Polish descent. This decision, alongside other changes, reflects Disney's efforts to modernize the narrative and address criticisms of the original film's dated themes.

The 2025 version of "Snow White" offers a new perspective on the titular character, portraying her as a survivor of a snowstorm during infancy. Her name is now a tribute to her resilience rather than her complexion. Rachel Zegler, who stars as Snow White, acknowledges this shift in the character's backstory.

"Snow White's name has a different origin story in the new film than the original animated Disney movie," said Zegler.

The original 1937 animated film by Disney depicted Snow White as having "skin as white as snow," a portrayal that has faced criticism for perpetuating outdated stereotypes. The remake also includes Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen, adding star power to the project.

However, the film has not been without controversy. Actor Peter Dinklage criticized the film for its "hypocrisy" and "backwards story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together." In response to these concerns, Disney emphasized their commitment to handling the characters with sensitivity and inclusivity.

"To avoid reinforcing stereotypes from the original animated film, we are taking a different approach with these seven characters and have been consulting with members of the dwarfism community," stated a Disney spokesperson.

Despite these efforts, the film has drawn mixed reactions from audiences and industry figures alike. David Hand, son of one of the original film's directors, expressed his disagreement with the new concept.

"It's a whole different concept, and I just totally disagree with it," remarked Hand.

Rachel Zegler has also faced challenges, dealing with racist backlash over her casting as Snow White due to her Latinx background. Nonetheless, she remains enthusiastic about her role and the discussions it has sparked.

"I interpret people’s feelings about this film as their passion for [the Snow White character] and what an honor to be a part of something that people are so passionate about," Zegler commented.

The film's L.A. premiere took place at El Capitan Theatre on Saturday, March 15, under the direction of Marc Webb. This event marked a significant step in introducing this reimagined classic to audiences.
