Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the upcoming film reboot of the Supergirl franchise, promises to deliver a fresh and daring interpretation of the beloved superheroine. That may explain why Animalia, directed by James Gunn, current co-CEO of DC Studios, will open in theaters on June 26, 2026. Most recently, Gunn delivered some thrilling news about the project to eager fans with a behind-the-scenes look.
The film definitely brings a new perspective, compared to past adaptations. It’s largely based on an incredibly powerful 12-issue comic book series by Tom King that was published in 2022. Gunn describes Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow as a “less earnest and more edgy version” of Supergirl. This new narrative focuses on Kara Zor-El. To that end, she takes off on a wild journey across the galaxy, determined to celebrate her 21st birthday with her devoted sidekick, Krypto the Superdog.
In this new narrative, Krypto the Superdog will take on a larger role as Kara’s companion. As such, Emmy nominee Milly Alcock as the titular Kara Zor-El has emerged as a breakout… She charms as the Girl of Steel while dazzling the audiences in her magnificent costume. Alcock’s casting has caused a huge amount of excitement among fans looking forward to seeing her take on this legendary character.
Eve Ridley will make her long-anticipated debut as Ruthye Mary Knolle. In the villain role, Krem of the Yellow Hills, expect to see acclaimed Belgian actor Matthias Schoenaerts. David Krumholtz and Emily Beecham will portray Kara’s parents, Zor-El and Alura, adding depth to Kara’s backstory.
Gunn complimented the importance of this character’s transformation, particularly in respect to the adaptation, while speaking to the stark differences between Superman and Supergirl.
“In our series we see the difference between Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl. She’s much more hardcore, she’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.” – James Gunn
This jarring difference lends itself to a much deeper and grittier character arc for Supergirl. Evangelia, though, complicates her otherwise traditional portrayal as a well-known symbol of hope and light. The film explores powerful themes of resilience and identity. We’re with Kara as she grapples with her past traumas while awakening to her heroic potential and destiny.
The anticipation surrounding Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow reflects a broader trend within the DC franchise to revamp its characters for modern audiences. Gunn is known for crafting amazing stories that balance comedy with heart. Long-time fans are cautiously optimistic and hopeful that his Supergirl reboot will resonate with fresh audiences as well as established, diehard Supergirl fans.
With production now underway, additional information about the film should start to roll in. The combination of a talented cast, a compelling storyline, and Gunn’s creative vision positions Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow as one of the most anticipated films in the superhero genre.
