Actor Jason Momoa has officially completed filming his scenes as the character Lobo in the upcoming film Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Lobo, the interstellar anti-hero bounty hunter with an aggressive streak and bad attitude, has been seen all decked out. Here’s all the buzz, direct from the production floor at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden! Momoa’s version of Lobo would be a welcome addition to the mess that has become of the DC cinematic universe.
Lobo, a character originating from a 2022 comic book series written by Tom King, will have a relatively small role in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Though Lobo will not have much footage, he’ll be a key player in the overall story arc. The story follows Kara Zor-El as she starts on an outer space adventure to prep for her 21st birthday with her faithful friend, Krypto the Superdog.
Close to the beginning of development, James Gunn, one of the film’s producers, confirmed Lobo’s involvement. He noted that this characterization is a direct departure from past representations of superheroes. He noted, “In our series we see the difference between Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl. She’s a lot more hard core, she’s not like the Supergirl that you’re used to seeing.
Momoa’s character is described as a “less earnest and more edgy version” of Supergirl. This counter-design complicates her story tremendously. The film aims to explore themes of resilience and survival through Kara’s experiences, contrasting her upbringing with that of Superman.
In addition to appearing in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Lobo’s character is anticipated to receive his own spin-off movie in the future. Fans are eager for the possibility of Lobo going toe-to-toe with Superman, further expanding the DC universe and intertwining its characters in new and exciting ways.
Momoa dropped a few clues to what Lobo will look like in an Instagram post. This understandably created a huge amount of buzz amongst fans and media. This intentional timing is just part and parcel of the built-up marketing around the film, as excitement grows for its release.
Jason Momoa certainly adds amazing star power to the role. Adding to Lobo’s mercenary and evil reputation, audiences will want to relate to this darker character in a bigger way. The purpose of our film was to give audiences a look at the other side of the Supergirl narrative. Along the way, it interlaces familiar features of DC Comics lore.
As production wraps up, fans eagerly await more details about Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and its release date. Based on our first look, the film looks to offer an exciting plot further developed by its richly varied characters and unique ties.
