HBO’s Lanterns Set for 2026 Release as Part of DC Universe Expansion

As the spooky Lanterns flicker in the distance, HBO is getting ready to introduce an even better series, Lanterns, early in 2026. The show will be a key component of the DCU: Gods and Monsters Chapter One rollout, a project spearheaded by DC Studios and filmmaker James Gunn. Lanterns looks set to bring an immersive tale, that’s for sure. Taking place during the great Damocles arc, the story will spotlight two of the most iconic Green Lanterns, intergalactic law enforcement agents, John Stewart and Hal Jordan monitoring Precinct Earth.

Lanterns provides a visually stunning, intellectual journey through the world of terrestrial television. It’s a masterpiece at intertwining art, mystery, and suspense, with touches from the inspirational legendary series True Detective. Stewart and Jordan take you deep into a chilling murder investigation anchored in the heartland of America. As they probe more, they reveal a disgusting enigma that connects with the wider story of the DC Universe.

The new series promises to take a deeper look into the relationship between the two Green Lanterns. It will treat them richly, deeply, humanely, beautifully as they see an existence where their superhero stature intersect with the rigors of mundane life. This innovative technique helps anchor the more fantastical aspects of the Green Lantern lore. Yet, all the while, it keeps a smart, fun, and playful demeanor.

James Gunn has been adamant that “Lanterns” will focus on both Stewart and Jordan. Some other notable Green Lanterns will show up during the story. The show is designed to be rooted in a world where aliens and superheroes are accepted realities, yet it strives to present its characters and stories in a relatable manner.

“This is a story of a couple of Green Lanterns John Stewart and Hal Jordan. We have a few other Lanterns peppered in there but this is really a terrestrial based TV show which is almost like True Detective with a couple of Green Lanterns who are space cops watching over Precinct Earth in it they discover a terrifying mystery that ties into our largest story of the DCU.” – James Gunn

Director James Hawes has shared his excitement about the project, emphasizing the one-of-a-kind possibilities of Lanterns. Most importantly, he underscored the need to focus on crafting a relatable story even with the sci-fi setting.

“Again, I wanted this world to be rooted, and while there’s only so far you can go with rooting characters in a show about Green Lantern, they are. This is a world where we accept that the Green Lanterns exist and aliens exist. So the rest of it is played straight and in the world as we know it.” – James Hawes

Hawes raved about the casting experience for the show. He’s sure the actor they chose for the movie brilliantly captures the spirit of his character.

“I honestly think he did it totally individually in the room. With some chemistry castings and the like, it just felt like he would inhabit the role. He has such a magnificent presence. He feels so forceful, so cool, so understated.” – James Hawes

The buzz around Lanterns just speaks to a larger excitement building for the future of the DC Universe on TV. By integrating core characters like John Stewart and Hal Jordan into compelling narratives, DC Studios aims to expand its reach and engage audiences on multiple levels.
