Stereolab, the influential British band known for their unique blend of pop and experimental music, will release their new album, Instant Holograms on Metal Film, on May 23. It’s an impressive achievement for the group. It’s their first new album in 15 years, since their last release Not Music in 2010. The new album is being released on their own label, Duophonic UHF Disks, in conjunction with Warp Records.
>Since last having released Not Music, Stereolab has turned their attention to reissuing much of their earlier output. Most recently, in 2022, they put out a reissue of Pulse of the Early Brain. Now, earlier this year, they reissued double-disc, reasonably priced editions of seven albums from their massive catalog. This decision definitely opens their music up to younger listeners who are discovering them for the first time.
In an unexpected move, the band sent a select few fans a cryptic 7” vinyl single, “Unsolicited Stereolab Material.” This single marks the arrival of that collaboration, featuring a stunning new song “Aerial Troubles” across both sides. On the flip side, you’ll find the song’s instrumental version. To excite their fans even further, the limited edition single came with crazy fill-in and word-finder puzzles. These brain teasers included the names of band members and hinted at new music!
Instant Holograms on Metal Film introduced this eclectic group of musicians. Just some of their talented collaborators include Rob Frye, Ben LaMar Gay, Ric Elsworth, Holger Zapf, Marie Merlet and Molly Read. The complex collaboration represents a powerful evolution in Stereolab’s sound. Yet at once, they hold onto that intangible creative factor that’s marked their work ever since their early 90s inception.
After months of speculation, Stereolab today revealed the news of their first new album and its accompanying single. This great news has everyone—including fans and critics—buzzing with excitement! Orchestras have long been at the cutting edge of innovation in music. Their return to the studio is a testament to their commitment to constantly explore their artistry and creativity.
