Lucasfilm has officially announced a new addition to the Star Wars franchise, titled Star Wars: Starfighter. Directed by Shawn Levy, this stand-alone feature is due to reach theaters on May 28, 2026. To say that Thursday, in Tokyo, the Star Wars Celebration 2025 began with an exciting bang would be an understatement. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and Chief Creative Officer Dave Filoni shared exciting information about this brand new thrill ride.
Set approximately five years after the events of Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise Of Skywalker, Starfighter will explore a time period that the 48-year-old franchise has not yet explored. The film promises to introduce audiences to all-new characters, expanding the Star Wars universe further while maintaining the essence that fans have come to cherish.
Production for Star Wars: Starfighter is set to commence this autumn, marking a significant addition to the franchise, which has already generated over $10 billion globally at the box office. Much of this financial success can be chalked up to the nine main films and two spin-offs that have dominated box offices across the globe.
Significantly, Starfighter is different from yet another soon-to-come project, The Mandalorian and Grogu, headed up by Jon Favreau. The movie is currently scheduled to come out on May 22, 2026. Most excitingly, it will feature a brand new storyline outside the existing Star Wars saga.
The global anticipation surrounding Star Wars: Starfighter highlights the enduring appeal of the franchise. The anticipation for new tales and heroes keeps old fans and new ones alike clamoring for more.
