Lana Del Rey just opened up about her new song “Bluebird,” and it turns out it’s inspired by a deep and painful true story. The brassy, ethereal ballad serves as a powerful symbol of self-healing. It takes as a springboard an incident when a bird flew into her bedroom window, the day that she was all set to go out and meet someone she hadn’t seen in years.
In a new Instagram video, Lana Del Rey explained the greater significance of “Bluebird.” As she told the emotional story of the encounter, she reminded the audience how profoundly nature speaks to us at life-changing times. “I had been seeing someone for a very long time and we hadn’t seen each other for a while, and he called and he asked me if I wanted to go for a walk,” she explained.
“All of a sudden a bird smacked into the double pane window doors of my bedroom, and I was shocked,” she said. When she found out that the bird was a sparrow, her joy over the experience came through.
When she picked up the injured bird, she was filled with the urge to sing to it. “So I just sang little bird fly away for each of us,” she said. She has faith in nature’s capacity to speak to us through difficult periods. “Sometimes I feel like nature has its own way of communicating with you, especially in extremely severe situations.”
Luckily, the little bird did not die from the impact and soon flew off, representing hope and resilience. This production experience struck a chord with Lana Del Rey, who has received prophetic indications from birds throughout her existence.
