The new origin film for Supergirl, one of the main characters in the DC Universe, has everyone talking. Intriguing information regarding its ensemble and plot line are leaking out every day! James Gunn is at the helm for this thrilling new addition to the “Gods and Monsters” slate. It provides an innovative approach to the iconic superhero, deviating from established representations.
David Krumholtz and Emily Beecham are set to appear as Kara Zor-El’s parents, Zor-El and Alura. The film will explore Kara’s journey as she travels across the galaxy to celebrate her 21st birthday with her companion, Krypto the Superdog. This narrative aligns with elements from Tom King’s acclaimed comic book series “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” released in 2022.
To further explain his vision for the character, James Gunn provided a look at her backstory, putting into perspective the differences between Superman and Supergirl. Addressing the character’s emotional state, he elaborated, “So that was the thing — she had a horrible childhood.”
“In our series we see the difference between Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl. She’s much more hardcore; she’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”
This portrayal marks a new, “less earnest and more edgy version” of the iconic superheroine.
Eve Ridley plays Ruthye Mary Knolle in the film. Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills, the film’s primary antagonist. Casting against type reveals how vital character interaction is to an effective narrative. These dynamics will play a major role in Kara’s evolution over the course of the film.
At the very least, as production continues, we can be assured, by Krumholtz himself, he has already seen his scenes wrapped. Most recently, he teased the film’s logo on social media. This announcement ignited a wave of hope and longing that maybe, just maybe, a new name was on the way. Speculation is rampant that they just left “Woman of Tomorrow” on the cutting room floor. Many speculated that the temporary logo could be an indication of this move becoming permanent.
Back in January of last year, new DC Studios head honchos James Gunn and Peter Safran announced the Supergirl reboot as part of their studio’s new direction. Fans were abuzz with excitement, wanting new takes on their favorite characters. Plus, Aquaman himself, Jason Momoa from Game of Thrones fame, has officially joined the cast, playing villainous dude Lobo!
It’s no wonder that excitement is growing for this new, more cynical, dark-humored Supergirl. Perhaps most intriguing will be how any of these changes impact audience reception. The film aims to carve out a unique identity within the expansive DC Universe while drawing from its rich comic book heritage.
