Akira Morii’s Baka’s Identity Set to Explore Japan’s Underworld

Tokyo-based production company The Seven is preparing to release its first theatrical film, Baka’s Identity, an underworld thriller directed by Koto Nagata. The movie is scheduled for release in Japan on October 24, 2025. It delivers an intense story that tracks at-risk young people as they find their way through the seedy underbelly of America.

Baka’s Identity takes place over the course of three harrowing days, centering on a young man who creates a female online persona. His ultimate plan is to take advantage of lonesome gentlemen and rob them of their identities, leading to a truly terrifying picture of need and fraud. The brilliant Kosuke Mukai, known for his distinctive musical mannerisms of writing, went to straighten out the screenplay. His earlier screenplay for Kei Ishikawa’s A Man was critically hailed at the Venice Film Festival, garnering eight Japan Academy Awards, including Best Screenplay.

Koto Nagata, who previously directed the 2021 drama series Lion no Oyatsu (Lion’s Snack), brings his unique vision to this project. Here’s how Nagata and Mukai are coming together to provide that new perspective. Their joint work shines a light on the pressures Japan’s youth are experiencing in an increasingly complicated and competitive world.

Akira Morii, producer of the blockbuster Netflix series Alice In Borderland, heads up production on Baka’s Identity. At a time when storytelling has never been more vital, he shines a light on the larger cultural importance of the film.

Tatsuo Sugai, president of The Seven, stated, “Baka’s Identity is the first theatrical film that The Seven has been involved in from planning and production to distribution. This film takes a different approach to the high-end productions that we have been known for, but we are confident that it is a theme that we should be bringing to the world now more than ever.”

The Seven describes Baka’s Identity as a “chase thriller about three young men trying to escape Japan’s dark underworld.” This general scene-setting description ends up being a great capsule summary of the film’s narrative tension and urgency. It takes viewers deep into a morally complex, violent underworld.

The cast features notable actors including Takumi Kitamura, Go Ayano, and Yuta Hayashi, each bringing depth to their roles as they navigate the complexities of identity and survival in the underbelly of modern Japan.

Baka’s Identity will be released on November 3rd. Keep an eye out! As riveting as this story gets, the movie itself is an important milestone for The Seven in their journey to producing good movies. The documentary is especially geared to galvanize domestic audiences around the world, resonating with them passionately. It manages to tackle serious social justice issues while still providing a fun and entertaining watch.
