James Osgood, a 55-year-old man, was put to death by lethal injection on Thursday night at a prison in south Alabama. He was pronounced dead at 6:35 p.m. Central Time, marking the second execution in Alabama this year and the 14th nationwide. Osgood pleaded guilty to the horrific sexual assault and murder of Tracy Lynn Brown. She passed away tragically in October of 2010.
In a statement to The Associated Press, Osgood acknowledged that he had abandoned all appeals of his death sentence. He stated, “I am guilty of murder.” Osgood violently raped Brown alongside his girlfriend, including making her perform oral sex on him. In an incomprehensible twist, he later killed her. Brown, 44 at the time of her death, was discovered in her home on October 23, 2010.
After about 40 minutes deliberation a jury found Osgood guilty of capital murder at the conclusion of his trial. The jury recommended the death penalty unanimously. Prosecutors said Osgood slashed Brown’s throat while she pleaded for her life during the attack. When he was arrested, authorities said Osgood and his girlfriend giddily discussed their morbid dreams. They had conspired to kidnap, rape and murder someone in advance before executing their gruesome crime.
At a resentencing hearing in 2018, Osgood expressed to the court his desire to die by execution. He didn’t want the victims’ families to have to go through more litigation. He stated, “I regret taking her from them. I regret cutting her life short.”
His girlfriend actively planned the crime and had ties to Brown. Consequently, she was sentenced to life in prison for her role in the traffic stop incident. This case has been an example of extreme brutality. The circumstances surrounding Brown’s death are just downright terrifying.
