Director Zack Cregger, best known for the wildly successful Barbarian, is in the midst of promoting his next masterwork. It’s Weapons, and everyone is waiting on baited breath! We’re so excited for the release of this highly anticipated film, which will be in theaters across Ireland on August 8, 2025. Warner Bros. Pictures will be releasing it wide. Cregger not only directs the film but writes the screenplay. This shows us his vast ability in the horror landscape.
On top of all that, Weapons features an absolutely killer ensemble cast. It stars Josh Brolin, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Cary Christopher, Benedict Wong and Amy Madigan. The film promises to deliver a gripping narrative, as stated by Warner Bros., which describes the plot: “When all but one child from the same class mysteriously vanish on the same night at exactly the same time, a community is left questioning who or what is behind their disappearance.”
Cregger wears several hats for Weapons. He is producing the film, in addition to being its director and screenwriter, along with fellow producers Roy Lee, Miri Yoon, J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules. The film’s Production/Creative team is committed to making a thought-provoking cultural conversation through cinema that goes beyond the surface level idealization associated with horror’s past.
Cregger has previously hinted at the film’s unique narrative structure, noting that it will be “a movie that unravels and reinvents itself as it goes.” With this first-of-its-kind approach, audiences will be captivated and amazed from beginning to end.
Richard Brener, a prominent figure in the industry, described Weapons as “intriguing and unpredictable, with a nice helping of batshit insane.” These endorsements speak to the faith in Cregger’s vision for this project.
With director of photography Larkin Seiple (I’m Not Here) on-set serving as major visual storyteller, Weapons ultimately became a truly collaborative effort from a talented core team. Ryan Holladay, Hays Holladay, and Zack Cregger created the original musical score. Their artistry scatters rich details throughout that artfully enhance the film’s tone and emotional impact.
Despite some confusion surrounding casting announcements, it is important to clarify that Julia Garner stars in The Fantastic Four: First Steps and is not involved in Weapons. However, what’s most exciting is the extremely talented cast they’ve assembled for this horror epic.
Weapons is designed to be a “multi and inter-related story horror epic,” drawing tonal inspiration from Magnolia, the 1999 film directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. This unique process makes Weapons a notable addition to today’s horror film landscape.
As that date approaches, so too does the sense of anticipation and excitement building around Weapons. It’s a beautiful piece with an impressive and diverse cast matched by its highly creative storytelling. With Cregger’s firmly-rooted history in the genre, expectations are through the floor for its debut arthouse impact.
