Bethesda Unveils Oblivion Remastered Amidst Modding Controversy

On April 22, Bethesda officially launched “The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered,” bringing the classic RPG to modern consoles and PC. The title officially released today and is now available on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, Game Pass, and PC. Even better, this exciting release comes in perfect time with its announcement! This remaster costs $50. Mainly, it wants to remaster a cherished entry in the series with updated graphics, expanded gameplay possibilities, and a host of quality-of-life upgrades.

Valve’s announcement has led to much excitement from fans of the original game, which has a long-storied heritage of modding support. With Bethesda’s announcement that there will be no official modding tools for “Oblivion Remastered,” the future of the game has left many modders in the community disappointed. According to Bethesda’s official support page, “Mods are not supported for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered.” This is a world apart from their previous open world games such as “Fallout 4” and “Starfield.” Those were games with huge modding support and huge support from the company, themselves.

While no such official tools exist, we can expect that modders will look for methods to get into the remastered version and change it up. The lack of a clear and easy pipeline for getting those mods to additional platforms would make these efforts much more difficult. Having modded “Oblivion Remastered” will undoubtedly be a challenge compared to the original game or even other recent Bethesda titles.

Bethesda released some instructions for players affected, warning that there’s no support for you if you experience problems while using unofficial mods. If you run into any gameplay issues, their advice is to remove mods. Next, if you are playing on Steam or Xbox App, check your game files.

“If you are experiencing gameplay issues while playing with mods, it’s recommended you first try uninstalling your mods, then verify your games files on Steam, or the Xbox App.” – Bethesda

The remastered remake comes with an absolute tide of tweaks that make the it a much more enjoyable experience. Cutting-edge graphics breathe all-new colorful life into the towns, dungeons, and characters of Tamriel. At the same time, some surprising new gameplay elements offer brand-new experiences for series veterans and new players alike. That huge haul of quality-of-life changes is decidedly an effort to shave down the more granular gameplay mechanics to make a sharper overall playability.
