In other news, the British Film Institute (BFI) will open BFI America, in Los Angeles, on April 23, 2024. As part of this initiative, 2023 will be a momentous year as we celebrate the 90th anniversary of the BFI National Archive. Featuring dynamic, creative programming, the UK Focus launch event will be an inspiring and celebratory bridge-building session between the two film cultures. Beyond that, it will emphasize the critical need for film preservation.
Barbara Broccoli, the highly-regarded producer who has shaped the James Bond series and other films, will lead BFI America. As a result, she’ll be a critical member of its oversight board. On the board are major figures, such as producer Deborah Schindler and filmmaker Terry Gilliam. It features marketing whiz Penelope Wong and UCLA professor Mali Heled Kinberg. They will bring their extensive national and global experience to bear as they help guide BFI America. Their mission is to become the US equivalent to the British Film Institute.
Focus on Preservation and Restoration
BFI America is also committed to the preservation and restoration of the BFI National Archive. This archive is an amazing treasure trove of nearly 90 years of collection. The organization’s mission is to preserve these cinematic treasures, keeping their stories alive for generations to come. BFI America continues to work closely with the US cinema and its dynamic film culture. This new joint program deepens the historic connection that has bonded the two areas through film.
Ben Roberts, the chief executive of BFI, couldn’t be more excited about the project. The UK and the US have long and fruitful ties in cinema, he explained, adding that we cannot wait to celebrate our ongoing cultural partnership and bring these remarkable gems from the BFI National Archive to US audiences. This sense of urgency underscores the need for cross-cultural dialogue, understanding, and collaboration within our industry.
Showcasing Film Treasures
BFI America will include a strong emphasis on film preservation. Beyond that, it will introduce exceptional feature films from the BFI National Archive to US audiences. The complete collection will be on display front and center at next month’s TCM Classic Film Festival, set for April 24-27. With huge media and guest attendance, this event creates an amazing launch pad for presenting landmark films and honoring the foundation of film history.
TCM’s participation will ensure that BFI America introduces British cinema to the broadest audience possible. This unique partnership brings to life the historical importance of these films. The festival was created to celebrate the classic films that influenced today’s industry. We’re excited that it focuses so much on the BFI’s continued commitment to restoration of these great works.
Building Bridges Between Cultures
In addition to supporting projects that foster collaborative activities, BFI America’s emphasis on co-production is intended to create connective tissue between American and British filmmakers and audiences. BFI America is committed to reaching filmmakers, scholars and film lovers throughout the US. In the process, they seek to deepen understanding and foster a community-wide appreciation of film.
The now appointed board members flat out have the chops to do the job. Their unique skills will be indispensable in addressing the complexities of film preservation and cultural exchange. Together, their expertise will help to make sure that BFI America is able to do its work to realize its ambitious mission.
