It’s About Time Production has officially begun on Christopher Nolan’s epic, The Odyssey. This transcontinental multi-arts, multi-disciplinary project is inspired by the ancient Greek epic poem usually attributed to Homer. This project marks Nolan’s foray into the fantasy genre, introducing audiences to the mythic tale of Odysseus, the King of Ithaca, and his tumultuous journey home following the Trojan War. The movie is slated to release in theaters on July 17, 2026. As with all of Nolan’s films, it’s guaranteed to feature his unique storytelling methodology combined with some never-before-seen visuals.
The Odyssey deals with deep themes of heroism, loyalty, pride, and the fight against the will of the gods. Fans can expect to see and experience all of the legendary scenes from the originating novel. They’ll experience Odysseus’s heart-pounding confrontations with the Cyclops Polyphemus, the hair-raising Sirens, and the terrifying witch-goddess Circe. It allegorizes the real-world, almost mythical struggles that our protagonists must contend with.
In an interesting change, Tom Holland will play Telemachos, the son of Odysseus. Needless to say, Holland’s casting has already created a huge buzz with many fans clamoring to see his take on this iconic character. Matt Damon can be seen stepping into the sandals of Odysseus. On the other hand, Samantha Morton plays Eurycleia, the steadfast woman servant of Odysseus and his household.
The ensemble cast also includes renowned actors such as Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron, Benny Safdie, Elliot Page, and Jon Bernthal. Mia Goth, who has been upped to the main cast in a non-speaking role, (per Chandor’s vision). Of course, speculation abounds that she will feature as one of the enchanting Sirens who lure Odysseus on his journey.
The Odyssey reinvigorates Homer’s timeless epic for a new generation of readers and listeners. As such, it stands as one of the great achievements in cinematic history for being the first major epic produced and released in IMAX film format.
