In Chelsea, Michigan, Serendipity Books is preparing to double its floor space. This new space will more than double the bookstore’s former size. Owner Michelle Tuplin led a community fundraising effort to cover expenses associated with the upcoming move. This gigantic undertaking includes moving approximately 9,100 books and hundreds of moveable boxes. Her new storefront will be opening later this month. Even better, it’s just in time for Independent Bookstore Day — April 26!
To make sure the transition would go smoothly, Tuplin issued a call for volunteers and the response was enormous. Over 300 members of the community turned out to help with the move. Neighbors, loyal customers and even passersby pitched in, showing their new bookstore just how committed they are to keeping their bookish community alive.
The policy change passed in less than two hours. We arranged the entire inventory alphabetically to maintain order during shipping and make sure no items got lost in the process. The most inspiring visitor was a volunteer 91-years-young, demonstrating the cross-generational support in the community.
Tuplin thanked everyone for all the amazing support that was sent her way. She observed, “A 91 year old lady was involved. A frequent full of heart problems was involved, and a parent with a 6-year-old. We thought that by approaching it book by book, we were able to reach, you know, everyone.”
The feeling of togetherness and coming together became a theme throughout the event. “It really meant the world for the community to come together and show their support,” Tuplin said. He challenged them to make good on their perennial rhetoric and do something tangible.
By fostering this concerted effort, Serendipity Books shows its deep dedication to service and advocacy on behalf of its customers. Local businesses such as Serendipity are crucial for creating a community hometown feel. The bookstore’s new building will allow for even more variety in offerings for visitors. It will be a lively center of activity for local events and programs.
