Daredevil: Born Again is set to redefine the beloved superhero franchise, creating a fresh start while continuing the story from season one. The new resistance army will be made up of familiar faces, including Maya Lopez aka Echo and Jessica Jones. Alongside her, they will come together to take on the evil Mayor Fisk, again played by Vincent D’Onofrio. The project’s creative team hopes to take advantage of the story’s tragic conclusion, while making certain that it’s different from past seasons.
The new season just around the corner. It takes a deep look into the aftermath of a horrific incident that took place at the end of season one. That story takes a dark turn as the heroes unite to wage a war of attrition against Mayor Fisk’s regime. Charlie Cox is back as Matt Murdock. D’Onofrio of course is back as Wilson Fisk. Additionally, Jon Bernthal will return as Frank Castle, promising to bring back the intensity and grit that fans expect from the series.
The development of a resistance is a central theme in Daredevil: Born Again. Aaron Moorhead, who co-directed a new pilot and the final two episodes, brought out the danger in that duality of this war. He noted, “The board is completely set in which Mayor Fisk has now become Kingpin again, but with New York in his grasp, and then there’s this vigilante thing that now has to go completely underground.” This creates the groundwork for a thrilling cat and mouse game between the established power of Fisk and Durham’s brand-new resistance.
Notably, the series underwent significant changes following the writers’ strike, which resulted in reshooting key scenes, including those featuring Ayelet Zurer’s Vanessa Fisk. Director Jeffrey Nachmanoff explained those creative decisions above and what went into returning to source material. He wrote, “To Marvel and the producers’ credit, they really didn’t try to shoehorn in. So we had to reshoot all of those scenes. Unfortunately, it meant I had to reshoot any scene that had Ayelet.
Even with these modifications, production team members still faced issues resulting from last minute alterations made during the process. Nachmanoff remarked on the complexities involved, saying, “It’s painful for some of the people involved because there were changes that didn’t have anything to do with anyone doing anything wrong.” He was amazed at how cohesive the final product ended up being, given its chaotic production history.
Foggy Nelson, an integral character in previous films, will apparently be killed off-screen which would be another major departure from the established story line. Naturally, the series will want to craft a new story that differentiates itself from prior numbered entries. Simultaneously, it will retain enough of the known to appease crusty old fans. This creative team’s solutions may not be explicitly tied to previous seasons, giving the show a freer, faster cutting storytelling style.
As Daredevil: Born Again gears up for its release, anticipation builds around how these developments will unfold on screen. The resistance’s formation against Mayor Fisk signifies a crucial turning point in the series’ narrative arc.
