Fugitive with Murder Conviction Linked to Police Commander’s Death in Mexico

Cesar Hernandez, a 34-year-old fugitive, has become a person of interest in the death of a police commander in Mexico following his escape from custody on December 2. Prior to his release, Hernandez had been serving an 80-year-to-life sentence for the charge of first-degree murder, after his conviction in Los Angeles County in 2019.

The day that he did escape, Hernandez was supposed to make a court appearance in Delano. He shrewdly fashioned a makeshift key to unlock his freedom from the chains that bound him. According to reports, he attacked a prison guard and escaped via a gate that had been left open. Because of his actions, law enforcement has classified him as “dangerous.” What frightens them even more is the fact that he is armed and not opposed to using violence.

Hernandez has a deeply disturbing criminal record. He entered a no contest plea to charges of manufacturing a dangerous ordinance and possession of drugs in a penal institution. The latest of his violent acts was Wednesday’s ambush in which he allegedly murdered a Mexican State Citizen Security Forces agent. The assassination of Mexico Police commander Abigail Esparza Reyes upped the ante significantly. This evolution increased the immediate need to apprehend the suspect.

According to U.S. Marshals Service spokesperson, their agency took part in the continued search for Hernandez, a high-risk fugitive. A $35,000 reward is currently being offered for anyone who provides information that leads to his arrest. This highlights the brutal threat he still represents to law enforcement and to the public at large.

Law enforcement agencies across the country together highlighted their commitment to ensuring accountability for acts of violence perpetrated against officers.

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation is still engaged in the active investigation of Hernandez’s escape and his involvement in these recent violent acts. While authorities are still in a manhunt for Hernandez, they ask you to contact them with any information that could help them locate him.
