Gotham City Takes Center Stage in DCU’s First Horror Film Clayface

Gotham City is set to become the chilling backdrop for DC Universe's first horror movie, Clayface. Directed by James Watkins, the film promises to explore the dark and mysterious world of Gotham, a city renowned for its blend of terrifying villains and heroic figures. The movie delves into the city's shadowy corners, presenting a story steeped in psychological and body horror elements.

Gotham City, known for its infamous residents like the Joker, provides the perfect setting for Clayface. As a place where criminals such as the Joker roam freely, it also serves as the home base for heroes like Batman, Nightwing, Red Hood, Batgirl, and Robin, who vigilantly protect its streets. The film will showcase these contrasts, bringing to life the complex dynamics between Gotham's heroes and villains.

James Gunn, a prominent figure in the DC Universe, shared his excitement about the film's unique approach to horror.

"Because it was just a really excellent body horror script. And the fact that it's in the DCU is just a plus. Then we have Clayface: pure f***ing horror. Like totally real. Their version of that movie, it is so real and true and psychological and body horror and gross. It's definitely R-rated," he expressed.

The narrative of Clayface centers around a B-movie actor who becomes desperate to maintain his relevance in Hollywood. In a bid to rejuvenate his career, he injects himself with a mysterious substance, only to discover that it grants him the ability to reshape his face and form. This transformation turns him into a walking piece of clay, altering his identity and twisting his reality.

"Sources say the film is budgeted at $40 million and is a Hollywood horror tale centering on a B-movie actor who injects himself with a substance to keep himself relevant, only to find out that he can reshape his face and form, becoming a walking piece of clay," reported The Hollywood Reporter.

Peter Safran, co-architect of DC's cinematic universe alongside James Gunn, highlighted the significance of setting this horror tale in Gotham City.

"It fits nicely within the DCU, and it takes us into the world of Gotham. So, the opportunity to make a horror movie for DC was kind of like a gift," he stated.

The film Clayface marks a bold move for DC as it ventures into the horror genre, offering audiences a fresh perspective on its iconic universe. By situating the story within Gotham City, the film taps into the city's rich history of crime and heroism, allowing for an exploration of themes that resonate with fans of both horror and superhero narratives.
