Home Is Where, the indie rock band known for their evocative soundscapes, has announced the upcoming release of their third studio album, “Hunting Season.” The album, produced by Jack Shirley, will be released on May 23 through Wax Bodega. This long-awaited release follows their 2023 album, “The Whaler.” It promises to be an adventurous and dynamic new chapter for the band.
The album “Hunting Season” features 13 fiery songs. Its lead song, “Migration Patterns,” captures the challenge of coming to terms with banal fates, and the never-ending search for meaning that persists through to the grave. In equally amazing news, Bea MacDonald, the frontperson of the band, has announced that she’s pregnant. This new album is a departure, going in a more clearly country-tinged direction. The record positively brims with the spirit of classic artists such as Bob Dylan. It captures the manifesto feel of 1970s country music, lacing poetic nostalgia with local present-day observations.
Home Is Where will be playing picks from “Hunting Season” at Liberation Weekend Festival this October in Washington, D.C. Don’t miss their performance at the Black Cat on MAY 30 and MAY 31! The festival stands in solidarity with the Gender Liberation Movement. In addition, it will feature great artists such as Ekko Astral and Ted Leo.
MacDonald told stories of her emotional connection to the music that had developed the band’s identity. She stated, “I was homesick and Gram Parsons and The Flying Burrito Brothers’ first record specifically sounded like home.” This thought exemplifies the extent to which the band’s influences have shaped their artistic evolution. Furthermore, she noted, “When we traveled as a band, the music that opened us up the most was country music like Parsons or Hank Williams.”
That tradition of sneak-peek tours shows MacDonald’s abiding love of music that connects to her life. “Listening to The Gilded Palace of Sin during the winter of ’21 opened a new tour tradition: when the weather is nice, the sun is shining, hopes are high, I put on that record and without fail every time something memorable happens.” That deep connection to their musical roots will make them a force to be reckoned with at the festival, for sure.
