James Gunn and Peter Safran have revealed an ambitious plan to reshape the DC Universe (DCU) with a series of interconnected projects across various mediums. Speaking with The Wrap, Gunn detailed their vision to release two live-action films and one animated film each year. In addition, they aim to introduce two live-action series and one animated series annually on the streaming service, Max. This multifaceted approach underscores their commitment to delivering high-quality content while maintaining a cohesive universe.
Gunn, drawing from his extensive experience in Hollywood, intends to break away from the trend of declining movie quality. His vision for the DCU involves crafting standalone projects that can be enjoyed independently but also offer special elements for audiences who engage with multiple projects.
“We remain steadfast in making sure that each of these projects works as a standalone project, so that you can go see ‘Superman’ and you can watch ‘Lanterns’ without having to see both of them,” said Gunn.
The journey into this reimagined DCU begins with a feature-length film starring Superman, followed by episodic projects that will expand the universe. Among the anticipated projects are "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow," "Lanterns," "Clayface," "Creature Commandos," "The Authority," and "The Brave and the Bold." Each project is designed to stand on its own while contributing to the larger narrative.
Gunn's dedication to quality is evident in his strategy to avoid the pitfalls other Hollywood productions have faced. By focusing on fewer, yet more meaningful releases, Gunn and Safran hope to ensure that each installment meets their high standards.
In addition to films, the DCU will feature serialized storytelling on Max. This includes both live-action and animated series, further expanding the universe's reach and depth. The inclusion of series such as "Lanterns" exemplifies Gunn's integrated approach.
“There’s going to be special things in there for people who have seen both,” Gunn added, emphasizing the interconnected experience fans can look forward to.
Gunn and Safran's collaboration promises a revitalized DCU that challenges traditional storytelling methods. By interweaving films and series, they aim to create a dynamic universe that captivates both casual viewers and dedicated fans alike.
