James Gunn, the co-CEO of DC Studios, is set to earn substantial compensation from his diverse involvement in the upcoming Superman film. Gunn, who was appointed alongside Peter Safran as co-CEO at the end of 2022, will receive directing fees, producing fees, and writing fees for his contributions to the project. His role extends beyond Superman, as he continues to shape the future of the DC Universe (DCU) with various projects under his belt.
Gunn's commitments include serving in his executive capacity on follow-up films and working on a World's Finest movie that teams up Batman and Superman. Additionally, he is developing the second season of Creature Commandos and is writing another DCU project with plans to direct. Currently, Gunn is in post-production on Superman, scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025. These endeavors underscore his busy schedule and the lucrative nature of his role at DC Studios.
"Gunn, for instance, will earn directing fees, producing fees, and writing fees for his services on this summer’s Superman—and, presumably, all the follow-up films he will work on, while also serving in his capacity as co-C.E.O. of DC. Even if he didn’t want to be paid, the various labor guilds would require at least minimum fees," the report adds.
Gunn's position at DC Studios is an example of a hybrid deal that covers both his creative and executive responsibilities. Such arrangements are becoming increasingly common in the industry, with figures like Kevin Feige also operating under similar models. These hybrid deals allow individuals to engage in filmmaking while also overseeing projects as executives.
"There are hybrid people, like Feige and Gunn, who make movies while also overseeing them as executives," the report explains.
In addition to his work on Superman and Creature Commandos, Gunn has already contributed to Peacemaker season 2. His ability to juggle multiple projects highlights his versatility and dedication to expanding the DCU's cinematic landscape. As a result of his extensive involvement, Gunn is positioned to receive as many as three separate paydays for his work on Superman alone.
The financial rewards tied to Gunn's multifaceted role reflect the confidence DC Studios places in his creative vision and leadership capabilities. With a slate full of high-profile projects, Gunn is poised to leave a significant mark on the DCU.
