JC Lee, the only child of the late comic book legend Stan Lee, has vehemently denied accusations claiming that she physically abused her father and mother, Joan. These allegations came to light just prior to Stan Lee’s passing in November of 2018. This set off a firestorm of media coverage and speculation about what was happening inside the Lee family.
Last month, JC Lee told the New York Post that the accusations of her abusing her elderly parents are “all lies.” She eloquently fought back against all of these charges. She shared her anger about what these charges have done to portray her in a negative light.
“They are all lies. That photo is insane. I never did it.” – JC Lee
Yet just this past Saturday, the Hollywood Reporter ran an article alleging that Stan Lee was a victim of elder abuse. They singled out JC as the person who carried out this supposed cruel treatment. Her actions were deeply controversial, particularly when she attempted to monetize her father’s legacy after his death. The allegations piled on top of this scrutiny, only increasing the negative attention.
Despite her efforts to capitalize on Stan Lee’s popularity, including the creation of new merchandise such as t-shirts and a board game, JC’s ventures have not met with significant success. It didn’t help that complicated deals over the rights to other projects that Stan Lee had been toiling on added complications to the mix. Unfortunately, a myriad of stakeholders now own the rights to his later works, preventing JC from ever seeing the full fruits of her business dreams.
In defense of JC, her business partner and one-time protege, James MacLean, protested her character. His was an important counterpoint to the conventional wisdom on the familial dynamics, in which he described the relationship between Stan and Joan as “mutually abusive.”
“They were equally abusive, the way they screamed at each other. But then it would be like, ‘Let’s sit down and have dinner.’ That was their relationship.” – James MacLean
Moreover, five other adults who had been friends with the Lee family stepped up to testify on JC’s behalf. They further indicated that they had never observed any physical aggression by her against her caregivers. Their testimonies helped to rebut some of the allegations being made by the complainants charging elder abuse.
JC Lee shared emotional testimony about the financial loss of seeing her father fought against and the pain at seeing how the world views her father. As an artist, she bemoaned struggles to create in the face of such obstacles.
“I feel these people have taken my life, and they’re eating off gold utensils and I’m eating off plastic.” – JC Lee
The discussion about the charges she faces continues to be debated. At the same time, JC vigorously protects her own reputation and grapples with the realities of her father’s legacy. As the debate over Stan Lee’s later years has shown, the family members who became involved met with a hostile environment. It’s an exposé of the toxic dynamics that can grow in families holding an unexpected jackpot of fame and fortune.
