Lizzo, the Grammy-winning singer, rapper, and performer, has frequently opened her weight loss story. She’s even on the cutting edge of handling her anxiety. In a TikTok Live session on April 22, the history-making 36-year-old artist described her trailblazing story to the world. She shared what steps she’s taken since the start of 2023 to turn her life around.
One of the biggest changes in Lizzo’s routine was her choice to quit drinking coffee. She told me that she would drink up to 1,200 calories in big Starbucks drinks. This greatly augmented her caloric consumption for the day. She cut out coffee in order to reset her nervous system. Her intention was to finally have some relief from the anxiety that she had suffered with for so long.
Like many, Lizzo has been open about her struggles with food and finding distractions. As she confessed, I love the idea of escaping reality by being around people a lot, and I loved eating food and drinking alcohol to forget what was happening. It was this self-awareness that pushed her to approach isolation with intention. By removing all the distractions she was able to dive head first into her weight loss transformation.
The artist has taken a calorie counting approach, but she is quick to point out that she doesn’t think that’s healthy, either. Rather, she believes it can be a powerful weapon to fight the dismal forces of the American food system. Lizzo began using a calorie deficit when she realized that she was vulnerable to binging.
“I had to start applying a calorie deficit, because I was prone to binging,” she stated. This approach has given her the tools to take a more in-depth look at her food intake. Today, instead of sugary confectionery offerings first thing in the morning, she offers up to 36 savory foods. “I do something sweet. It’s gotta be with some sort of like carb. I’ll have like almond butter and toast,” she explained.
Lizzo consistently shares her gym workouts through selfies. She documents these little victories and advances on her social media channels, sharing them with several thousand followers on Instagram and Twitter. Then in September 2024, she posted on Instagram. She said that the mindset change left her feeling lighter, energetically and emotionally.
Lizzo’s commitment to her health has led to tangible results. She reported lowering her body mass index by 10.5 and losing 16% of her body fat, information she shared with fans in January. Her experience embodies a universal story of self-discovery and empowerment.
I’ve really been trying to get my anxiety in check for years. That was a really bold move from Lizzo. She was finally willing to make the inside match the outside and no longer was going to wait to be happy, emphasizing the strong connection between her mental health and physical change.
