Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions (SPWA) has acquired all international rights to the highly anticipated sequel, Spinal Tap II: The End Continues. The announcement is made as the Capitol Productions documentary prepares for a national theatrical release set to open widely on September 12. Bleecker Street recently kicked off their awards run by winning the US rights to the aforementioned mockumentary sequel. It chronicles the legendary British heavy metal group Spinal Tap as they get back together for one last tour after a 15-year breakup.
The sequel has all your favorite characters back for more. It stars a who’s who of musical icons—Paul McCartney, Elton John, Garth Brooks, Trisha Yearwood & more! With a mix of original cast members and new appearances, the film promises to deliver both nostalgia and humor to fans.
A Legacy Revisited
Since its initial release on March 2, 1984, the original film, This Is Spinal Tap, has cemented its place in cinematic culture and history. In 2002, it was added to the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress, which recognized it as “culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant.” The original animated feature left quite a legacy. Today, audiences wait in excited anticipation for the sequel and the further adventures of Spinal Tap.
Rob Reiner returns to the big screen as documentarian Martin “Marty” DiBergi” in this latest edition. Co-creators Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer are once again returning to form! They return to their touchstone characters as the various members of Spinal Tap, furthering the vicinities golden ties between the two works.
