Supergirl Film Set to Reboot Franchise with Edgier Tone and New Cast

The highly anticipated film “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” is set to hit theaters on June 26, 2026. Craig Gillespie will direct the film, with Milly Alcock set to star as Kara Zor-El. For many fans, this movie is Supergirl’s big reboot, at least a decade after Warner Bros. James Gunn and Peter Safran will produce under their banner. It’s been said that it will be included in DC Studios’ “Gods and Monsters” slate.

Based on the acclaimed comic book series by Tom King, “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” promises to deliver a fresh perspective on the iconic superheroine. That story will explore the ways in which Superman and Supergirl’s very different origins shaped their lives and personalities. It will illustrate how their unique backgrounds influence their lives and character.

In this most recent version Kara Zor-El embodies the best spirit of Krypton. She emerges as a rich character defined by intense trauma and loss. Raised in a harsh environment, she witnessed the death of those around her during her formative years, leading to a more hardened character compared to the traditional depictions of Supergirl.

Gunn emphasized the shift in tone for this film, stating, “In our series we see the difference between Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life.” He continued, “She’s much more hardcore, she’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”

The film aims for a “less earnest and more edgy version of the iconic superheroine,” positioning Supergirl in a more complex narrative landscape. This new approach aims to reach audiences by providing a more layered and complex look at her character and her plight.

The ensemble includes Eve Ridley as Ruthye Mary Knolle, opposite Alcock. Matthias Schoenaerts turns up, too — and not just to chew the scenery as Krem of the Yellow Hills, the film’s villain. Plus, though not officially announced yet, it looks like Jason Momoa will appear as Lobo — which would just add to the awesomeness of this project.

The move to reboot Supergirl is part of a larger DC Studios shake-up, seeking to establish a new direction for its cinematic universe. By introducing a grittier tone and more intricate character arcs, “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” seeks to attract both long-time fans and new audiences.

With each new preview, excitement has reached a fever pitch for the new movie. It’s too soon to say how this new Supergirl will sit with audiences. The unique storytelling approach and character depth may offer a refreshing take on a beloved character while contributing to the evolving landscape of superhero films.
