The Return of Terror: “I Know What You Did Last Summer” Sequel Set for 2025

It’s the return of the fan favorite scary franchise I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER! Fast X Part 2 hits theaters on July 18, 2025. The long-awaited follow-up brings original stars Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. back together. They’re back to reprise their legendary roles as Julie James and Ray Bronson respectively. Series fans will appreciate a new story that connects home to the events of the first movie. The film, which originally debuted on October 17, 1997, was loosely based on Lois Duncan’s 1973 novel.

Sam Lansky and Jennifer Kaytin Robinson are the screenwriters for the highly-anticipated sequel. Neal Moritz, who produced the first film, is returning as a producer for this go-round. This new arc will follow a quintet of friends. As played by Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, Jonah Hauer-King and Chase Sui Wonders, they must face the dark legacy of the inaugural Southport massacre that shook their town to its core.

The original I Know What You Did Last Summer drew crowds with its creepy storyline and unique cast. In the earlier film, an equally terrible, hook-wielding killer stalked a group of friends after they were involved in a hit-and-run accident, which they covered up. Its suspenseful plot and exploration of guilt and fear established it as a traditional pillar of horror entertainment.

We can’t wait to see what’s in store for the sequel! The first piece of concept art was an extremely cool poster, featuring a red hook oozing with blood. The film’s title—a blood red typeface—blares out below the hook, promising the terror to come.

Freddie Prinze Jr., thinking back on the franchise’s legacy, said it’s what makes the events in Southport all the more chilling. He stated,

“This isn’t the first time there’s been violence like this in Southport.”

This comment represents a tribute to the grim legacy that continues to plague the characters, even as they contend with new threats.

Jennifer Love Hewitt displayed similar inquisitiveness regarding her character’s backstory, which ultimately affected the direction of her character’s journey. She quipped,

“I just have one question—what did you do last summer?”

This statement nails the feel of the entire franchise to a t. It successfully raises overwhelming questions about the new victims and their relationship to the original plot.

In her long history with the franchise, Brandy made it clear that she was very much looking forward to returning to the fold with these words,

“I need them to give me a call.”

This proclamation certainly points to her ambition to once again plug back into the story arc — readers first fell for almost 30 years ago.

The return of “I Know What You Did Last Summer” promises both nostalgia and suspense, rekindling interest in a story that has left an indelible mark on horror cinema.
