Tim Gunn, the beloved mentor and fashion authority from Project Runway, has opened up about his favorite and least favorite seasons of the show. In a candid revelation, Gunn declared Season 14 as his least favorite, while his admiration for Season 1 remains unmatched. Gunn fondly considers Season 1 to be his favorite, attributing its significance to the novelty of the series' debut. Despite the passage of time, he believes that Season 1 will always hold a special place in his heart.
While Season 1 captures Gunn's affection due to its historic status, he praised Season 13 for the exceptional quality of work it showcased. Airing in 2023, Season 13 was marked by Sean Kelly's victory, a designer renowned for his eveningwear creations during the competition. Kelly's success on the show led him to establish his own company, Hercules New York, demonstrating his swift transition into the swimwear industry.
Reflecting on Sean Kelly's remarkable talent, Gunn expressed admiration for one of Kelly's gowns, which left a lasting impression on him.
"It still makes me tear up. It was so breathtaking. Breathtaking. And Heidi wore one of his gowns to the Emmys," he shared.
Despite his role as a mentor on Project Runway, Gunn maintained a professional distance from contestants after their departure from the show. He follows a personal policy of not reaching out to alumni unless they contact him first. This approach mirrors his role as an educator for over 32 years, where he often felt a parental connection to his students. However, Gunn clarifies that he did not view himself as a crucial factor in the success of the designers on the show.
"I respond this way: So-and-so can only do what their resources and ambitions allow them to do. And we have no control over that, aside from 'make it work,' one of my refrains in my classrooms and occasionally on Project Runway. I can't want you to succeed more than you do. And why do I feel that I’m more invested in this than you are? That won’t work," Gunn explained.
Gunn's insights into Project Runway seasons offer a glimpse into his unique perspective on the fashion competition. As he continues to inspire aspiring designers with his wisdom and experience, his reflections on past seasons remain a testament to his enduring impact on the fashion industry.
