On Tuesday, April 22, Tom Hanks dropped a big ol’ hint about his return to the beloved Toy Story franchise. He shared this really cool behind-the-scenes shot on Instagram of his hand at the voiceover artist booth as he kicked off his work on Toy Story 5. Fans are getting so excited for this next film, which is due in theaters June 19, 2026.
Incredible production of Toy Story 5 is already happening, with Hanks returning as the voice of Woody. Rounding out the originals with him, Tim Allen is back as everyone’s favorite space ranger, Buzz Lightyear. In a recent interview with WIVB, Allen revealed that the character of Jessie, voiced by Joan Cusack, will take center stage in this new animation. This change in emphasis is a sure sign of a changing story within the franchise.
In February 2023, Pete Docter, an executive producer and one of the original creators behind Toy Story, discussed some of the film’s features. He promised that the next film would have “surprising” elements, contributing to the anticipation of its release.

The teaser trailer presented at D23 showcased Woody, Buzz, and Jessie waving to viewers, hinting at the emotional depth expected in the film. At the event, concept art depicted the toys watching on helplessly. Their owner was distracted with a tablet, clearly pointing to futures of technology and connectivity.
Though the franchise has changed through time, and will no doubt change again, Hanks and Allen both have decades of experience to lend to this new endeavor. At 68 and 71, respectively, they are still just as involved at the emotional core of Toy Story. The decision to shift focus away from Woody and Buzz and center on Jessie may allow for fresh storytelling opportunities within the familiar world of toys.
