Tyra Banks Shares Insights on Her Name and Its Cheerleader Connection

Tyra Banks recently revealed during an interview with Jenna Bush Hager that her family initially considered naming her “Kelly Banks.” The revelation came as part of a candid discussion about her upbringing and the significance of names in her family. Banks explains that her mother liked the name “Kelly.” It just fit this whole cheerleader persona, which was a big identity to have growing up when I grew up.

My mother told me that she was actually gonna name me ‘Kelly Banks’, Banks explained, noting that the name jumped out at her as appropriate for a cheerleader. She remembered the classic Barbie dolls having names like Kelly, further cementing any ties the name had to a spunky, young, fresh vibe. That last point from the conversation brought home how culturally significant names are. Banks explained that girls named Kelly are mystified about why they’re ranked as the most popular girls in their schools.

Banks told us that her own name came from a collective of choices in her family. Originally, her grandmother had chosen a name with more letters for her, but it was her mother who made this option more straightforward. That decision was what produced “Tyra Banks.” Over the past two decades, this name has been at the forefront of every thriving modeling and entertainment career.

As Banks considered the progress she’s made over her career, she shared one audacious idea. After retiring from modeling, she briefly explored changing the spelling of her last name to “Banx.” This line of thinking supports her urge to transform and accommodate herself as she moves between different chapters of her life.

In addition to that, when I first started modeling, I used the name ‘Tyra Banks. Once I got to Paris, I realized it was time to lighten the load. I just transformed into ‘Tyra’. She continued, illustrating her evolution from an aspiring model to a worldwide trailblazer.

Banks has been a leading force since the beginning of her long illustrious career, dominating a male-centric industry. In her 40s she even posed on the cover of Sports Illustrated again! In the process, she grows and stays true to herself at the same time. It illustrates the incredible resilience and agility that Michelle brings to our ever-changing world.
